Pharmaceutical companies depend on the successful development of new drugs. A couple of years ago I had the chance to help one of our clients with an embarrassment of riches: they had succeeded with more drugs than expected, and now had to determine how many of them to launch, given the accelerating costs of marketing and sales, and how to coordinate the close collaboration needed between their R&D and commercial staff. We worked with a large team of senior clients on every aspect of this highly complex issue, from modelling the economics of the launches to agreeing with the most senior managers how decisions would be made on launch timing and investment. It was a project which was quite literally on the CEO's agenda and we saw it through from strategic analysis to supporting the implementation of our recommendations. This project was special to me for many reasons, but to name three: I worked very closely with some of the managers at the clients at a critical time and formed a bond with them, which I know will last a long time. The issue was one which had the potential to make or break the competitive position of the company and we had the chance to make a major impact on it. Having worked with the client subsequently, I know that much of the work we did has stood the test of time and continues to create value.
