Hannah is a Consultant in the London office. She has an MEng in Metallurgy and the Science of Materials from Oxford University and joined BCG as an Associate in January 2002. Hannah recently spent two years at London Business School studying for an MBA sponsored by BCG. During my time at BCG I have worked in a variety of different sectors including financial service, pharmaceuticals, energy, telecoms and media considering issues such as “What should our strategy for 2012 be?”, “How can we turnaround an underperforming business unit?”, “Why is the UK business less efficient than our other European divisions?” or “How can we encourage retail outlets to sell more of our products?”. Through BCG I have also had the opportunity to spend two months working in Geneva, to go to business school to do an MBA and to undertake a seven month secondment placement with the Sutton Trust; a charitable trust that helps children from less advantaged backgrounds get access to better educational opportunities. During my time at the Trust I helped them evaluate the success of their summer schools program and worked on the development of a new 5 year strategy. As part of this I analysed the Trust’s current activities and undertook extensive interviews with key stakeholders including donors, key advisors, policy makers and politicians, journalists and education leaders to identify the Trust’s strengths and highlight possible areas for them to focus on in the future. This was a fantastic experience for several reasons. Firstly I had the opportunity to work in a very small, dynamic organisation and was given responsibility for my own projects. Secondly I was working on a project that would have a significant bearing on the future direction of the Trust and I had the opportunity to have a major impact on this. Finally I had the opportunity to work in the non-profit sector on issues I personally feel are important.
