Toby joined BCG in 1997 as an MBA hire from Stanford Business School. He has a Chemistry degree from Oxford University and is currently a Partner and Managing Director in the London office. Toby graduated from Oxford University in 1992 and joined the Mac Group, which later became Gemini Consulting. In 1995 he decided to study for an MBA at Stanford, California, fully intending to return to his old firm. But a summer internship with BCG convinced him to change his plans.
Financially it wasn't advantageous to join BCG since I had been sponsored for my MBA by my old firm and had to pay the money back. Looking back, this was absolutely the right decision. The major pull factors were the quality of the people which is truly outstanding and the culture - relaxed and informal, there's a good work-life balance. For me it was the right fit. Most of our clients are big blue-chip companies, however, we also work with a small number of smaller companies particularly in the technology field. What excites me about this business is working with clients and seeing them achieve something special. Recently I helped the management team of a travel company to launch a new business on-line. It has grown to become the Number One travel site in the UK. It's very satisfying when you see all your efforts come to fruition in a positive way and the individuals you work with succeed in their organisation. The relationships you develop in that kind of situation is extremely important. When you find you are the "go-to" person for the client and if he's pondering a problem on a Sunday afternoon, it's you he rings, then you know you are succeeding. For me that's what it's all about. |
