Kumar joined BCG as a Consultant from Harvard where he was a Kennedy Scholar carrying out research into political philosophy and a Teaching Fellow in International Capital Markets. He has a BA in Economics from Durham and an MPhil in Economics from Cambridge where he was a Bank of England Scholar.

"The decision to join BCG was made at a real cross-road in my career where I had some great opportunities to go into investment banking, public policy or other consulting firms. BCG appeared to offer the best balance of personal development, broad industry experience, individual responsibility and real world impact of all of them. 3 years on I don’t regret that decision for a second. I have learned so much from my time at BCG, not just analytical skills such as how to structure and solve complex problems or build clear and credible arguments, but real world soft skills such as how to lead big teams or take large organisations on a journey of change. The learning and training is taken incredibly seriously and it isn’t just “on the job”. At other firms this often gets sidelined but at BCG there is a constantly updated curriculum for each cohort, where Associates and Consultants have to do at least one training course a month and time has to be made available on their project to do so. More generally I continue to be impressed and learn from the sheer wealth of knowledge, experience and influence that BCG has worldwide. BCG works with the leading clients on the most challenging issues in every one of its offices across the globe, and it is surprisingly easy to tap into that pool of experience on any individual case. On one of my first cases at BCG I sent an email to group of topic experts asking for help on Retail Banking Distribution expecting 1 or 2 responses, within 48 hours almost everyone on the list had responded and had helped to take my thinking on the subject forward in leaps and bounds.

Overall, I am really enjoying my time at BCG, and when I look at the opportunities now available to me outside  they are all at a much higher level than if I had gone into investment banking or public policy in the first place and worked my way through. For the moment however, BCG continues to offer the best balance of interesting work, work-life balance and of course financial rewards of any other opportunity in the market.”
