The Summer Consultant programme gives MBA students the chance to experience consulting work first hand, by working as part of a regular case team. Interns typically join BCG for 8-10 weeks between the first and second years of their MBA, during which time they will have the opportunity to work on at least one full-time project, as well as receiving a range of formal training throughout the summer. The London office has taken interns from a variety of US and European business schools over the past few years.
What will I do on the internship programme?
Summer Consultants work full-time on cases through the summer, and are treated as full and integral members of the case team. Typically, you will receive your own module to work on, but will also work closely with the Project Leader and the rest of the team. Recent Summer Consultants have worked on topics that ranged from a strategic review of a hospital business to utilisation improvements in the airline industry.
In addition to the project work, there are a wide range of training and social activities throughout the summer, both within London and co-ordinated across the European offices. There are many opportunities to meet people from all levels within the firm; this year the programme included trips to the theatre, dinner and drinks events, as well as a weekend trip to Rome. There are also introductory sessions to each of the key industries in which BCG operates.
What will I learn?
The Summer Consultant programme is a fantastic opportunity to learn about consulting in general, but also to learn and practice many of the day-to-day consulting skills. The summer starts with a week’s induction training spread between Paris and London, and this is followed up with additional training sessions through the summer. These range from technical trainings in analytical techniques, BCG strategic tools and specific industry issues through to softer skills such as presentation or interview skills.
The majority of learning is likely to be on-the-job, through working with and receiving coaching from senior BCG members of your case team. As soon as you join you will be given a 'buddy' who will act as a point of contact for any questions that you may have. You will receive extensive coaching throughout the summer as well as feedback on your performance, and will be encouraged to learn and try out new skills.
